On Saturday, March 21st, I taught NRA Personal Protection Inside the Home to two students. Four were signed up but two had medical issues pop up causing them to post pone until the next one. Both students and I used Smith and Wesson 9mm pistols. An M&P Compact and a M&P Shield. Neither experienced any issues. My demonstration pistol, my department issue M&P 2.0 Metal with Holosun 509T and Streamlight TLR-1HL, worked fine as it typically does. For those of you that are wondering what this course teaches, it teaches students who already have a baseline of safety and pistol operation how to fight with their pistol in the confines of one’s home. Home fortification and what to do in the aftermath of a home invasion are discussed during the lecture. This a class that everyone should take.
On March 22nd , I taught a private four-hour handgun lesson to a regular student of mine. Wef inally got her optic zeroed, as it did not come with an adjustment tool as she bought it used last summer. We worked on accuracy, trigger management, presentation from a Zendira bag, single handed shooting, reactionary targets, and movement. Her Springfield Hellcat and the Shield RMS optic worked fine. During the last lesson, she experienced stoppages due to improper grip. She has fixed that issue which made me proud of her progress.
She always feels more confident after attending her regular private lessons. You too can be a regular private lesson student at $50 an hour. I recommend a minimum of two hours of private instruction monthly, for those who want to improve on their current level of shooting.
On March 27th through March 29th , I went to Dallas, Texas for the annual National Tactical
Conference, now called TacCon to sample a buffet of trainers to see what the industry is putting out there. I thoroughly enjoyed the three days of training where I attended seven two-hour lecture courses and four two-hour live fire blocks. I also shot in the Pistol Match which the pressure of shooting at TacCon for the first time got to me a little and reflected my target earning me a dead middle finish of all those who shot the match. I will be eventually adding all these courses to the after-action reviews on Club 5120, but it may take a while since I must gather my notes and thoughts from 11 separate trainers teaching their mini blocks of
instruction before writing them. If you are thinking about training with other great instructors,
TacCon is the place to sample them before investing the time and money into a full weekend
course.
For that reason alone, I recommend everyone attend it at some point. Not only was it a
weekend of good training, it was a reunion of my friends and family in the training community.
It is the only place where you will have 50 of the nation’s top instructors teaching in one spot
and more of them training as students beside you. I will be back.
